Time and Space

As this round of essay coaching is closing in, I am reflecting on a trend I would really like to see shift going forward.

I have had the privilege of meeting some really interesting teens over the last few years. I have, also, had the distinct pleasure of speaking with several admissions counselors, essay readers, and college professors.

One thing that has become painfully obvious to me is that colleges and high schools are not on the same page. What I am hearing from universities about the type of students they are looking to admit, and what high schoolers (and their parents) are being told, and believing they need to do to get into said colleges are not even close to being in alignment.

Therefore, parents are on a merry-go-round, students are on a high powered high school roller-coaster, and neither are moving these kids any closer to becoming the healthy, joyful, passionately curious students universities are longing to admit into their parks.

Pondering: what would it look like if high schoolers had time and space in their schedules to truly figure out their own passions?
